The Individual Pour-Over Coffee Packets You Didn’t Know You Wanted

Hooked Coffee

Disclosure: I received sample packets of Hooked Coffee to try, with the option of a product write-up. I was intrigued with the individual pour-over options, which are pre-measured, conveniently sealed, and ready-to-go for your immediate use. Different than instant granules and dunk bags, this single-serve pour-over coffee felt like an upgrade without owning the proper pour-over equipment. Overall, I was pretty impressed.

Move over instant coffee, there’s a new single-serve option in town that doesn’t require more than hot water and a mug. Unlike most other quick, single-cup coffee options available, Hooked is leading the way with pour-over pouches for a higher-end, single-serve coffee experience.

Women owned and operated, Hooked uses multiple coffee roasters to complete its line-up of specialty coffees. Roasters like Andytown, Equator, Onyx, and Partners help keep Hooked Coffee sustainable and transparent. The company offers pour-over pouches, brew bags, and capsules that are compatible with Keurig. The coffee stays fresh for up to one year thanks to the nitro seal.

Hooked Coffee was inspired by sleep deprivation – as good a reason as any – and the desire to make a better future for coffee and coffee lovers. The company uses private label brands and beans with its innovative brewing method. Partnering with a half a dozen roasters, Hooked Coffee offers a variety of roasts from light to dark with varying flavor profiles. The website features a personal quiz so you can find the right pour-over packet made just for you.

I received a variety pack of roasters, featuring:

  • Onyx Coffee Lab – geometry blend with notes of berries, stone fruit, early grey, and honeysuckle
  • Partners Coffee Roasters – Burundi Gahahe, a single origin roast with notes of golden raisin, dried fig, and honey, and Brooklyn blend with notes of milk chocolate, toffee, and dried fruit
  • Andytown Coffee Roasters – shore leave hook blend with notes of dark chocolate, sweet tobacco, honey, and roasted peanuts, and Andy’s blend with notes of dark chocolate, hazelnut, and torched sugar
  • Equator’s Coffees – Peru Cajamarca, a single origin roast with notes of chamomile, golden raisin, and kettle corn

How the packets work

The concept is simple. Each pour-over pouch is individually wrapped and ready to go. The pouch features convenient tabs on the side to hook to your mug so it stays in place. Open the pouch at the top to expose the grounds. Pour your hot water in slowly to brew the coffee. Create your customized brew strength depending on how much water you pour over the grounds. That’s it.

My first attempt didn’t go as planned, however. The pouches are somewhat delicate, and I easily opened it too much, which split the pouch down the side. After that discovery, the rest opened without issue.

According to directions, pour hot water up to the halfway mark a few times. That amount of water made for, what I consider, diluted coffee. After playing around with the amount of water, I got a strength I preferred but it resulted in about 4 ounces of brewed coffee. But when I hit my preferred strength, each coffee blend I tasted was delicious, and therefore, went down in a couple of gulps.

Pros and cons

Hooked Coffee has both pros and cons and depending on how you take your coffee, you may or may not agree with this list.

Pros:

  • Super convenient pour-over option
  • Take anywhere, travels well
  • Needs no coffee equipment, just a mug
  • Attaches well to mug and stays in place
  • Variety of blends with great taste

Cons:

  • Does not yield much coffee, unless you enjoy really light roasts
  • Pouches are a little delicate
  • Little expensive for what you get
