Bean and Bean Coffee Company is a mother and daughter owned coffee brand out of New York. Claiming USDA organic, fair trade, and direct trade, this coffee company boasts rare varieties of coffee beans from award-winning farms.

The Purple Sneaker had the opportunity to try its classic brew, Fancy Diner Coffee, as well as an original – Booooozy Barrel-Aged Coffee.

About the company

The mother-daughter team at Bean and Bean, Jiyoon and Rachel Han, are licensed and certified as coffee sommeliers. Focusing on female equity, Bean and Bean began in 2008 in New York City with the first coffee roastery in Queens, NY.

Multiple origin coffees are available, from places such as Brazil, Ethiopia, Hawaii, Panama, and Tanzania to name a few. Bean and Bean also offers Gesha coffee – a rare, delicate coffee variety sourced from award-winning farms. Gesha coffee is a variety of coffee, named for its original sourcing from the Gesha Village in Ethiopia. But Gesha coffee can come from a number of places, such as Panama or Costa Rica.

Bean and Bean Coffee Company features four locations. The company roasts and sells specialty, award-winning blends through its website and also on Amazon.

Booooozy Barrel-Aged Coffee

Booooozy Barrel-Aged Coffee is made with beans infused with the unique flavors of bourbon casks. Working with Matchbook, a women-owned distillery in Greenport, Long Island, New York, Bean and Bean sources charred, bourbon-infused white oak barrels for roasting Guatemalan and Colombian beans to create its Booooozy Barrel-Aged Coffee.

The Guatemala Santa Felisa Gesha Washed and Colombia Cafelumbus Gesha Honey are sourced from fourth-generation, women-led farms. The beans sit for nine weeks in the barrels before being roasted. The end result yields a smooth, medium cup of coffee with notes of molasses, bourbon and oak.

I tried the Booooozy Barrel-Aged Coffee a few different ways. I made a full pot of coffee from a standard drip maker using the recommended serving instructions. Then I made a single cup with a reusable K-cup and finally, a pour over.

The recommended serving for a standard pot of coffee was far too light for me. The reusable K-cup also couldn’t hold enough grounds for it to be worthy of a cup. But the pour over method – that created a delicious cup of coffee once I doubled the recommended amount of grounds.

Fancy Diner Coffee and more…

Bean and Bean Coffee Company offers a wide range of origins and blends. The Fancy Diner Coffee is a dark roast featuring beans from South America. It was created to conjure up thoughts of “cozy diner moments,” according to the website. The Fancy Diner Coffee delivers a solid cup of coffee, great for any time of day.

Other blends include Good Day Sunshine, Downtown Blend, and Queens Blend. But if you’re wanting single origin coffees, check out Tanzania Kilimanjaro Peaberry, Indonesia Sumatra, Hawaii Kona, and Costa Rica Honey for starters. There’s also decaf and instant available.
